Originally introduced in 1931, the Reverso’s iconic swivelling case was designed as a functional solution to protect the dial and glass during polo matches. Over time, its blank metal reverse evolved into a perfect canvas for artistic expression, embracing engraving, enamelling, and other decorative crafts.
For the 2025 Chinese Zodiac Year, Jaeger-LeCoultre adds a new chapter to this legacy with the Reverso Tribute Enamel ‘Snake’. The third in a series celebrating the Chinese Zodiac—following the Tiger and Dragon editions—this timepiece honours the snake, a symbol of longevity, wisdom, and mystery in Chinese tradition.
A Tribute to Engraving and Grand Feu Enamelling
The reverse side of the watch reveals a hand-engraved snake emerging powerfully from a wreath of golden clouds, set against a lustrous black Grand Feu enamel background. The polished scales, enhanced with black rhodium, and the sandblasted texture of the clouds create a striking play of light and movement.
The engraving process involves a technique known as modelled engraving, requiring unparalleled precision and dexterity. The engraver meticulously sculpted the snake’s form on a surface already coated with Grand Feu enamel, a challenge demanding extraordinary skill to avoid damaging the pristine enamel. Using ten chisels of varying sizes, the artist spent 80 hours crafting this intricate work of art.

Creating enamel of such depth and richness requires five to six layers, each fired and cooled to achieve its flawless finish. The process spans over 24 hours of meticulous work, followed by half a day of polishing to ensure a perfectly uniform shine. The matching tones and textures of the case back and dial are a testament to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s unparalleled craftsmanship and dedication to preserving this ancient art form.
